The Nd:YAG 1064nm infrared laser is used to destroy nail fungal infections. As the laser energy is absorbed by the fungi, it creates a heat response and causes the fungus to die, leaving normal tissue uninjured. The number of treatments depend on the level of infection present, severe nail fungal infections require a higher number of treatments. Normally a course of 3 is recommended with 2 to 3 week intervals, however a second course may be required with more persistent cases.
During treatment a mild heating of the nail is expected which subsides immediately after cessation. Generally the area remains the same or lightens over the following weeks. As the fungus dies, the nail plate is able to grow out without reinfection. The nail should be trimmed back to remove the discoloured nail. The nail is photographed and measured to ensure changes take place between treatments. All nails may require laser treatment for Onychomycosis.
