Keratosis Pilaris is a hereditary common skin condition, in which areas of skin become rough and bumpy. It is caused by hardening of keratin which is the dominant skin protein. The hardened skin cells act like a plug blocking hair follicles creating the rough bumpy appearance of the skin. Keratosis pilaris mainly presents on the upper arms, thighs and buttocks. It can also develop in other areas, although occurrence is less common. The bumps can appear light or red or brown in colour and may often be itchy.

Q Switch laser treatment and chemical peels are often used to improve cellular turnover, softening of keratin and to address the pigmentation caused by the condition. Laser hair removal may also be incorporated in areas of hair growth.Removal of hair reduces follicular blockage, therefore preventing the formation of keratin plugs.
Immediately post treatment the area will feel warm and may appear slightly red. This reaction is temporary and usually resolves within a few hours.
