What is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) systems differ from Lasers as they offer a broad range of wavelengths as opposed to one wavelength lasers. IPL technology delivers infrared and visible light wavelengths simultaneously penetrating through the epidermis and dermal layers of the skin. The light stimulates changes at a visible level as well as at a molecular level, stimulating the revitalization and rejuvenation of skin cells. Over a period of time the skin appears much younger. Visible improvements take place in elasticity, collagen, redness and pigmentation and with regular treatment the skin becomes clearer, smoother and more youthful.

IPL Technology & Indications

Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre clinicians only use proven medical grade IPL technology. The medical grade IPL system used at Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre allows for a wider range of filters and rely on the expert dermal clinician to control settings according to the treatment required. Unlike other IPL systems, the medical IPL technology offers a larger variety of filters including 560, 590, 560, 615, 645, 695 and 755nm and function by blocking emission of shorter wavelengths of light. Apart from wavelength, a wider range of other treatment parameters including pulse duration, number of pulses, and delay between pulses are customized, affording clinicians greater versatility and precision in treatment. The main feature of IPL is its ability to treat various targets simultaneously.

The different filters absorb into targeted chromophore: haemoglobin (red), pigmentation (brown) and water (responsible for the collagen contraction, stimulation and visual improvements at cellular and molecular level) Using a range of Light Filters, IPL can treat a variety of conditions:

Indications:

  • Fine lines
  • Skin laxity
  • Open pores
  • Hair removal
  • Ingrown hair

As Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre has many technologies, the dermal clinicians are more likely to combine the effects of various laser and IPL systems to achieve faster and more effective results. A consultation is required for the clinicians to properly assess and discuss treatment options.

Ipl Rejuvenation
  • What can be expected from an IPL treatment?
  • Caution

IPL has been used by The Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre dermal clinicians since 1997, well known for its rejuvenating properties by improving the colour and texture of the skin. In fact new research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology suggests that IPL treatments not only improve the appearance of the skin but also restore gene expression of photoaged and intrinsically aged skin to resemble young skin.

  • IPL uses a broadband of visible and infrared light to photothermally target pigmentation & capillaries/redness. The energy produced by the light is absorbed by the chromophores changing light to heat energy effectively causing their targeted destruction.
  •  Skin texture is refined by stimulating new collagen and causing collagen contracture through controlled dermal heating and the skin’s natural repair response. As a result skin texture improves by the activation of growth factors which trigger repair and subsequent rejuvenation.
  • Histological studies show dermal thickening with increased, organized arrayed bundles of normal collagen in the dermis caused by remodelling after IPL treatment.
  • In recent studies IPL has also been shown to also change gene expression, triggering younger gene expression.

The IPL used at Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre is a proven Medical system which has the technology to give optimal results. With extensive scientific studies and proven efficacy, it was granted FDA approval (Federal Drug Administration of America) and approval by the Australian TGA. The distinct advantage over other IPLs is its wider range of settings that enables the expert clinician to freely customize settings, minimizing side effects, optimizing results, for the specific hair and skin combinations.

Unfortunately in the last few years some overseas manufacturers have distributed cheaper IPL systems in the beauty/hairdressing industry. These IPL systems are produced with limited capability resulting in cheaper prices yet achieving less desirable outcomes.

The Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre Dermal clinician’s experience and qualifications are based on years of using medical grade IPL technology and a university degree specialising in the theory and practice of Laser and IPL Technology.
