MILIA

What are Milia?

Milia are small, raised bumps on the skin. It is a type of tiny skin cyst filled with a protein known as keratin, in the form of dead skin cells. Milia are generally 1 or 2mm in size and are pearly white in colour. They are most often seen on the skin around the cheeks, nose, eyes and eyelids, forehead and chest however may occur anywhere on the body.

Individuals often confuse milia with a whitehead pustule and repeatedly try and squeeze the milia out which can lead to trauma of the skin leading to scarring. As they are not quite surface enough to be squeezed out, extractions are necessary by experienced Dermal clinicians to avoid scarring.

How are Milia treated?

Extractions are very effective in the removal of milia if performed by Dermal Clinicians. As an incision is required with a sterile probe, although tiny, there is a risk of infection if clients try to extract milia themselves. There are other alternative modalities that can dissolve even the smallest and more numerous milia. The Dermal clinicians at Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre will assess and recommend the best solution.

What are the immediate post treatment effects and long term results?

Milia are removed easily and efficiently, leaving only a red spot which resolves over the following 24-48 hours. As a simple micro-incision is required to release the milia, healing from the extraction is fast. A single treatment is sufficient to remove milia, depending on the number present. Repeated treatments may be required in the future if there is a tendency to develop Milia.

Cost for treatment is assessed according to the requirement. A consultation is necessary with a one of the Dermal Clinicians or Cosmetic Nurse.
