Broken Capillaries

What are Broken Capillaries?

‘Broken capillaries’ are statically dilated capillaries which are also known as telangiectasia. They appear as red thread-like lines commonly found on the face, particularly the nose and upper cheeks, chest and legs. Capillaries that are clustered together may also appear as a red patch or a bruise that does not disappear.

Causes for broken capillaries include chronic exposure to UV rays, facial injuries, pressure and excessive alcohol consumption. All of these factors can cause the body to heat up, leading to an increase in the flow of blood within the blood vessels. The occurrence of ‘broken capillaries’ is also influenced by hereditary predisposition and increases with ageing.

While the condition is referred to as ‘broken capillaries’, it does not mean the capillaries are broken. Any damage caused due to exposure to the cold or to the sun leads to the capillaries looping towards the surface of the skin and back into deep layers of the skin. This makes the skin look red and unsightly and these blood vessel segments become more visible through the surface of the skin.

Broken capillaries are more common and among people with a fairer complexion and can occur on the nose, the cheeks, the sides of the face, as well as the chin.

Both Laser and IPL can be used for the treatment of telangiectasia (broken capillaries), however Laser treatment is the most effective option when there are distinct capillaries. Vascular laser treatment provides a specially targeted treatment whereas intense pulsed light tends to be most effective for more generalised redness. The specific laser wavelength is used which is attracted to haemoglobin (red pigment) in the vessels. The laser light causes the vessel and blood to coagulate instantly. The Dermal clinicians at Melbourne Laser & Aesthetic Centre use chilled tip laser technology allowing for comfortable treatments.

Treatment times range from 10-30 minutes depending on the area(s) treated.

A follow up appointment is generally scheduled for 3-4 weeks post treatment, at which time any remaining vessels may be retreated. The number of treatments will vary depending on the extent of the capillary network and location.Typically, 1-3 treatments are recommended for facial capillaries (again depending on the extent of the network). Other factors affecting the number of treatments include colour and size of the capillaries. Capillaries that are brightly coloured often respondfaster than those that are faint.

Immediately after the laser treatment, the area is mildly inflamed. This usually resolves within a few hours to a few days. The treated vessels may appear reddened or darkened, and begin to disappear through the following days to weeks (depending on their location). A calming Jane Iredale mineral makeup powder can be applied post treatment, aiding in covering any redness and provides a SPF20 for sun protection.

The laser treatment causes the vessels to be broken down immediately after which they are gradually removed by the body’s natural immune processes. The Laser treatment does not stimulate new capillary growth nor does it prevent new ones developing. In fact, individuals who have developed dilated capillaries are likely to be predisposed to this problem and can expect new dilated capillaries to develop with time. Typically, clients may find that they need to treat the area every 12-24 months to maintain clearance. Taking precautionary measures such as sun protection, limiting exposure to the sun, and limiting alcohol intake can also assist in minimising further capillary dilation.

The cost of a broken capillaries treatment in Melbourne depends on the number of treatment sessions recommended in your case. Depending on how severe the condition is, you may require more than a single treatment, thereby increasing the cost.

The cost of treatment is assessed during consultation and will be discussed before treatment begins.
